Chisa Fujioka
藤岡ちさ
A painter whose subject is squirrels. Over seventeen years she made more than 300 paintings for the packaging of a pâtisserie.
Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1977. She graduated in Western-style painting from the Department of Painting, Faculty of Art, Joshibi University of Art and Design, in 2000. On leaving, she gave a postcard-sized painting of a squirrel to the pâtisserie in Yoyogi-Uehara, Tokyo, where she had worked part-time as a student, and from 2001 she was painting the pictures for the shop's confectionery packaging.
Over the seventeen years to 2018 she painted more than 300 squirrels, each keyed to a season or an occasion. Her books include the poem-and-picture collection Risu-tachi no Haru Natsu Aki Fuyu (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter of the Squirrels; Akaaka, 2012), the picture book Lily to Nuts: Yuki no Christmas (Lily and Nuts: A Snowy Christmas; Kosei Publishing, 2018), and Risu-tachi no Origami Letter Book (Sekaibunka, 2026).
In recent years her work has centered on original paintings in oil, shown in exhibitions of paintings and prints at department stores across Japan. Since December 2021 she has painted the cover art for an Italian restaurant's main menu, and in 2024 a shop selling goods based on her work opened at JR Fukui Station.
