Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: The Three Great Views (Woodblock Reprints)

Woodblock reprint, mounted as a hanging scrollWorks: 3

Woodblock reprints of Under the Wave off Kanagawa, Fine Wind, Clear Morning and Rainstorm beneath the Summit, printed by hand in a present-day workshop under the colour supervision of the International Hokusai Society, and mounted as hanging scrolls.

These three are woodblock reprints, printed in our own time from Hokusai's designs. They are not paintings by Hokusai's hand.

These three are often singled out as the most celebrated of the Thirty-six Views: the great wave, Fuji turned red, and lightning at the foot of the mountain. Hung side by side, they show one mountain changing with the light and the weather.

The impressions were pulled by hand at Takahashi Kobo, an Edo woodblock workshop, and each was mounted as a hanging scroll. How the colours were supervised and printed is told in the article “Hokusai's Colours, Brought Back”.
