Andy Warhol
アンディ・ウォーホル
The defining artist of Pop Art, and his portrait of Elizabeth Taylor screened onto silver in 1963.
Born in Pittsburgh in 1928, Warhol studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology before moving to New York, where he became a successful commercial illustrator in the 1950s.
In the early 1960s he developed his method of repeating images through silkscreen, taking Campbell’s Soup cans and celebrity portraits as his subjects. Working from his studio, the Factory, he portrayed Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley, holding up a mirror to an age of mass production and fame.
Extending his practice to film, publishing and music production, he exerted a decisive influence on the art of the late twentieth century. He died in New York in 1987.
