About This Work
A Silver Liz from the Ferus period, 1963
One of Warhol’s 1963 Silver Liz (Ferus Type) paintings, in which Elizabeth Taylor’s portrait is silkscreened onto a silver ground. The metallic silver appears to have been sprayed or applied by hand, a mark of the experimental methods Warhol pursued at this time.
Mechanical reproduction and the trace of the hand
The image was printed through the mechanical process of silkscreen, with details such as the red lips added by hand. Combining reproduction and handwork on a single canvas lies at the heart of Pop Art.
An original surface, never restored
A professional examination in November 2025 found no evidence of restoration, retouching or overpaint under ultraviolet light. The stretcher and canvas are stable, with only minor, age-consistent fine cracks and abrasions. The painting retains the texture and color balance of the moment it was made.
