A Lecture by Yukio Shakunaga — Ecchu-Seto Ware: “The White Clay of Tateyama”

A hundred years since the revival of Ecchu-Seto ware. A talk on the skill and spirit cultivated over long years of potting, and on the appeal of clay itself. From his official website, here is the announcement of the 22nd public course on the culture of tea, at which Yukio Shakunaga was the lecturer on 28 June 2026.

A Lecture by Yukio Shakunaga — Ecchu-Seto Ware: “The White Clay of Tateyama”

This course took place on 28 June 2026 and has now ended. The announcement below was published on his official website before the event.

We are pleased to announce that Yukio Shakunaga is to be the lecturer at the 22nd public course on the culture of tea.

Under the title “Marking a Hundred Years since the Revival — Ecchu-Seto Ware: ‘The White Clay of Tateyama’”, he will talk about the path Ecchu-Seto ware has taken through its history and its distinctive appeal, and about his own potting with hakudo, the white clay that is the gift of Tateyama.

It is a rare public lecture in which he draws on his own experience to speak about the techniques he has refined over a long creative life, the spirit he puts into his work, and the ties between the culture of tea and ceramics.

Everyone is welcome — those already at home in the world of tea, of course, as well as students and the general public. We very much look forward to welcoming you.
