Tokonoma Garden – Sanumaya no Niwa

2026 RHS Chelsea Flower Show (London)

Silver-Gilt Medal, Show Garden category, RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026

A house centred on its tokonoma was a place where the family gathered, neighbours came to call, and the hours passed in richness and warmth. Now that life with a tokonoma has become rare, he looked again at its essential value and proposed a “Tokonoma Garden” linking a traditional sense of beauty with life today. It is planted with coral-bark maple, redvein enkianthus and Japanese iris, among others. With this garden he won an award for the eighteenth time in a row, in the twenty-two years since he first exhibited in 2004.
