About This Work
A roof tile and a puppy
Like Frog and Saxifrage in the album of ten leaves held by the Hokusai-kan in Obuse, this leaf takes a roof tile as its motif — a turn of mind characteristic of Hokusai. A piece of architecture set beside a living creature makes still object and life answer one another. Hokusai was known for his fondness for puppies, and a warm, affectionate gaze rests on his subject.
