- One leaf from an album of twelve paintings. The album's title slip records that in the Tenpo famine of 1836, when many lay fallen in the roads, Hokusai — then seventy-seven — conceived this album and by it barely kept himself fed.
About This Work
A ghost drawn in the fewest lines
Hokusai drew many striking pictures of ghosts and yokai, and brought them often into his book illustrations. Even among these, the extreme economy of the flowing line here and the pale colouring are a superb quality found only in Hokusai.
