Provenance

  1. One leaf from an album of twelve paintings. The album's title slip records that in the Tenpo famine of 1836, when many lay fallen in the roads, Hokusai — then seventy-seven — conceived this album and by it barely kept himself fed.

About This Work

The Edo ethic of reverence

In Edo Japan, Confucianism was received less as a religion than as learning and thought. It spread beyond the samurai class into the society of the townspeople, and its ethics — filial piety, the order of elder and younger, reverence for the old — shaped daily life and social custom. More than the portrait of a historical figure, this picture reflects that valuing of reverence for others.
