About This Work
A festive motif in a year of famine
One leaf of the album of twelve thought to have been made around 1836, in the years of the great Tenpo famine, to keep its painter fed. Mizuhiki cords tied around dried bonito belong to celebration and to the giving of gifts — an auspicious motif. That such a festive subject was chosen while the whole country suffered may carry Hokusai's own prayers, or his thought for the lives of those around him.
