- Signed “brush of Gakyo Rojin Manji,” with a square intaglio seal reading Katsushika. The slight upward flick at the end of the character for “brush,” together with the period in which this seal was in use, places the work in Hokusai's late seventies (so the vendor's documentation).

About This Work
Perhaps made for a celebration
Between an old pine set boldly at the centre and the young bamboo rising at its lower right, the morning sun climbs large into the eastern sky. Placing a near motif big at the centre and letting the eye travel quietly to the subject behind it was a composition Hokusai commanded well; Mishima Pass in Kai Province, from the Thirty-six Views, is built in almost the same way. The old pine, the young bamboo and the rising sun are all of high auspicious meaning, and the fan was very likely made to order for a celebration.

Hokusai’s fan paintings — three works painted in the shape of a fan
Hokusai’s paintings from his own brush are not confined to hanging scrolls and albums. Fan paintings survive too, painted on paper in the shape of an open folding fan. On a surface bounded by arcs, wide at the top and narrowing towards the bottom, what did Hokusai place, and where? We look at the three fans the gallery handles, one at a time.

Buying a Hokusai painted by his own hand
Hokusai is known for prints. He also painted directly with the brush — one sheet, one hand, no block between. The gallery currently holds twelve album leaves, five hanging-scroll works in six scrolls, three fan paintings — twenty paintings in all, one of them sold — and three Thirty-six Views reprinted and mounted as scrolls.
